Amboseli National Park
Covering a total area of 392 square kilometers, Amboseli National Park is located northwest of Mount Kilimanjaro, right on the border with Tanzania. It is part of the larger Amboseli ecosystem, which spans 3,000 square kilometers.
Surrounded by six communally owned group ranches, Amboseli attracts large concentrations of wildlife during the dry season, making it one of Kenya’s most popular wildlife destinations.
Habitats and Wildlife
Amboseli National Park features five main wildlife habitats: acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush, swamps, marshland, and open plains. The park is renowned for its big game and scenic beauty, with the towering Mount Kilimanjaro providing a stunning backdrop.
The park’s lush environments are home to over 80 different mammal species, ranging from the tiny spectacled elephant shrew to large herds of African elephants. Additionally, it hosts 400 bird species, further enhancing its appeal.

Getting There
Amboseli is accessible by both road and air. The main road route is via the Nairobi-Arusha road through the Meshanani Gate. This route is tarmacked up to Namanga, after which it becomes a murram road up to the gate. The entire journey is about 75 km. Alternatively, you can travel via the Nairobi-Mombasa road through Emali, a 228 km route that is tarmacked up to Emali and then murram from Emali to the Remito Gate.
For those who prefer air travel, Amboseli has an airstrip at Empusel Gate. Other airstrips are located in Namanga town and at Kilimanjaro Buffalo Lodge.
