1 Day kampala City tour
Relate safaris
Kampala, Uganda’s largest city and capital, is known for its peaceful atmosphere and friendly residents. A city tour will offer you a glimpse into Uganda’s cultural sites, religious structures, market setups, administrative buildings, transportation modes, cuisine, hotels, and academic centers. You’ll also learn about the religious, political, and economic history of Uganda, the Pearl of Africa. Key attractions include the Kabaka (King) of Buganda’s palace, Kasubi Tombs (burial site of Buganda kings), Kabaka’s Lake (a man-made lake by the King of Buganda), Protestant and Catholic cathedrals, Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, the Bahai Temple, Gaddafi Mosque (Uganda Supreme Muslim Council), Kibuli Mosque, the Parliament of Uganda, and the central business district.
After an early breakfast, our tour guide will pick you up from your hotel for the Kampala tour. You will visit the following places:
Kabaka’s Palace and Parliament:
The Kabakas of Buganda have a ceremonial palace where a modern house, Tweekobe, was built. Kabaka Muteesa II was attacked here by Idi Amin’s soldiers, forcing him into exile in Great Britain, where he later died of poisoning. Located on a hill overlooking Kampala, the palace covers nearly a thousand acres and includes torture chambers used by Idi Amin. The traditional fire at the palace gate has been burning since the inception of the Buganda monarchy and will only be extinguished upon a king’s death. The palace also features a representation of all Baganda clans and their roles, as narrated by a royalist. Nearby is the Bulange, the parliament building where the Kabaka and his ministers deliberate on Buganda Kingdom’s issues.
Kabaka’s Lake:
The largest man-made lake in Africa, created by Kabaka Mwanga, was intended to connect to Lake Victoria as an escape route but remains a royal lake near the palace, home to birds, fishing spots, and leisure activities.
Kasubi Tombs:
A UNESCO World Heritage site built in 1882, Kasubi Tombs was the largest grass-thatched structure in the world and the burial site for Buganda kings. Although it was burned down in 2010, it is undergoing restoration and will be included in the tour once completed.
The Uganda Museum:
This museum showcases Uganda’s cultural heritage with ethnological and natural-historical exhibitions. Founded in 1908, it features traditional culture, archaeology, history, science, and natural history exhibits, including a collection of traditional musical instruments that visitors can play.
Makerere University:
One of Africa’s most prestigious universities, Makerere University boasts a rich history and has hosted renowned professors like Prof. Mazurui, author Paul Theroux, and Ngugi wa Thiong’o. Its blend of colonial and contemporary architecture makes it a noteworthy tour destination.
Namirembe Cathedral:
Originally built in 1903 as a grass-thatched cathedral by Baganda craftsmen, it was replaced by the current domed structure after being struck by lightning. Part of the Anglican Church of Uganda, it offers a fascinating view of Kampala.
Rubaga Catholic Cathedral:
The oldest Catholic cathedral in Uganda, Rubaga Cathedral is situated on a hill with beautiful trees, flowers, and a stunning view of Kampala.
Baha’i Temple:
The only Baha’i Temple in Africa, located on Kikaaya Hill, offers a park-like environment with fruit trees, flowers, and green lawns, making it a peaceful retreat and popular picnic spot.
Namugongo Martyr’s Shrine:
A memorial for 22 Catholic martyrs burned to ashes for defying Kabaka Mwanga. Every June 3rd, pilgrims commemorate this day, and the shrine’s unique architecture and holy water well make it a must-visit destination.
Owino Market:
Africa’s largest second-hand clothing market, located near Ham Stadium, is bustling with activity. Popular for its wide range of second-hand clothes from Europe, Asia, and the USA, it’s a place to experience local commerce and bargain for goods.
