Relate safaris
This 5-day Kilimanjaro Hiking Safari follows the Marangu trail, the oldest and most established route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its gradual ascent, the Marangu trail is a favored option among climbers. However, its shorter duration can pose challenges for altitude acclimatization. One of its notable advantages is the presence of huts along the route, offering better shelter from the cold compared to camping in tents. The tour includes convenient pickups and drop-offs in Arusha to enhance accessibility and ease of travel.
Day 1: Pick-up and Transfer to Mount Kilimanjaro
After a hearty breakfast and a briefing, embark on a one-hour journey to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. Here, complete the necessary registration before commencing your ascent. The initial part of your journey winds through lush jungle terrain, leading you to the Mandara encampment.
Consider a side trip to Maundi Crater, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including Northern Tanzania and Kenya. Keep an eye out for towering Eucalyptus trees, colorful birds, and lively Colobus monkeys in the forest canopy.
Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at Mandara Camp.
Day 2: Hike from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leave the dense jungle behind as you ascend through expansive moorlands to reach the Horombo campsite.
Along the route, soak in stunning vistas of Mawenzi and the towering Kibo peak. Look out for the magnificent giant lobelias and groundsels dotting the landscape. Be mindful of the increasing altitude effects during this part of the trek.
Dinner and overnight stay at Horombo Camp.
Day 3: Hike from Horombo Hut to Kibo Camp
Continue your ascent on Mount Kilimanjaro, leaving behind the last watering point as you cross Kilimanjaro’s saddle nestled between the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Initially passing through upper heathland flora, the landscape gradually transitions into a lunar-like “moonscape.” Following this leg of the climb, enjoy supper, rest, and prepare for the final summit push.
Dinner and overnight stay at Kibo Camp.
Day 4: Hiking from Kibo Hut to Horombo Camp
Begin your trek to the summit early in the morning, typically between midnight and 2:00 a.m. Traverse steep and challenging scree or snow-covered terrain until reaching Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. The ascent continues to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point.
Experience breathtaking landscapes at every turn, capturing memorable summit views to share with friends and family. After celebrating your summit achievement, commence your descent, pausing for lunch and rest at Kibo before proceeding to the Horombo campsite.
Day 5: Descent to Marangu Gate, Transfer Back to Arusha, and Departure
Following breakfast, begin the gradual descent. Traverse the moorland to Mandara Hut, then descend through a scenic woodland trail to the Marangu National Park gate. Be prepared for potentially muddy terrain at lower elevations; consider using gaiters and trekking poles for navigation assistance.
Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, a vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your accommodation in Arusha, approximately an hour away. Alternatively, arrange with your guide for a drop-off at Kilimanjaro International Airport if you have an evening departure.
